Friends today I am over at one of my favorite websites! Bird’s Party and I am sharing a tutorial on one of the fun elements from our Voodoo by the Bayou styled party for Bird’s Party Magazine.
Hi! This is Dorangela, from Two Prince Bakery Theater. I am so excited to be visiting Bird today with a fun project. Were in that spooky time of the year and one of my favorite holidays, Halloween! This year I had the pleasure to style a table to be featured in the Fall Issue of Bird’s Party Magazine. For my party I decided to do Voodoo down by the Bayou. These jelly eyeball shots were one of the fun details of that party. I adapted this recipe from a fun book of Jelly Shots by Test Kitchen.They can be made either using alcohol ( I made the ones for the party gin and tonic) or non-alcoholic, the ones I am sharing with you today! Hope you enjoy this fun Halloween idea!
Jelly Eyeball Shots
These jelly shots are super simple to do once you get the hang of it. I am going to break it down for you so you don’t have to do it three times like I did 🙂 before getting it perfect!
3 packs of unflavored gelatin
1 1/2 cups of Sprite
1 1/2 cups of fruit nectar of your choice (make sure it is as clear as possible, we chose a pear nectar)
1 tablespoon of lime juice
a domed ice cube tray (yes not easy to find, I actually got lucky and found this one at Target for $1, you can also use jelly shot cups but you won’t get the cool domed eyeball shape)
Round cookie, fondant, or pastry cutter the size should be relative to the size of your ice cube tray cavity
(it is to cut out the middle of the eyeball)
Green food coloring
Blue Food coloring
Combine the Sprite and fruit nectar mixture in a sauce pan and add the 3 packets of gelatin. Cook at medium low heat stirring frequently until gelatin is completely dissolved, approx 4-7 minutes.
Separate 1/3 of the mixture and place in a shallow bowl or pan, add green food coloring
(add alot of green food coloring because you want a very vibrant green so that it stands out when you layer the shot, trust me!)
You want the liquid to not be very deep because you will be cutting it out to make the center of the eye

3. Set this green mixture in the freezer for approximately 20 minutes to firm up.
4. While you wait for the green mixture to harden, take the remaining 2/3 of the mixture (the undyed part) and place it in an easy to pour container ( I used a gravy boat)
5. Prepare you ice cube tray with some spray Pam, and wipe of the excess. This will assure that they jelly eyeballs pop out easily!
6. Take your green mixture out of the freezer once it is firm. Now take your circle cookie cutter (small) and start to cut out green circles from the jelly. I did them all at once and then peeled them off.
7. Take your cotton swab and saturate with the blue food coloring. Now draw a pupil in each of the green circles. When you’ve done them all, place them in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to set.
8. Remove the green jelly circles with the blue dots from the refrigerator and with a dry paper towel dab off the excess food coloring.
9. Now take each green jelly circle and place blue dot down (very important) into each cavity of the ice mold.
10. Almost done! Now once each ice mold cavity has a green jelly iris in it and fill each ice cube cavity with the clear mixture that you set aside. Fill all cavities then place the ice cube trays in the refrigerator overnight!
And we’re done! How cute are these looking back at you! The kids would absolutely love these, believe me!
